										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Labour Relations Authority signs a Memorandum of Understanding with Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) to further strengthen the functions of LRA in enforcing and implementing the Employment Act.</p>
<p>LRA and MIRA has agreed to collect Service Charge information from employers via MIRA’s online portal “MIRAconnect”, where submission of information through the portal will be deemed as fulfillment of employers’ legal obligation to submit service charge information to both authorities.</p>
<p>The Authorities have also established a mechanism to collect fines imposed by LRA through MIRA.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="p1" style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;"><span class="s1"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;">Following the Sixth Amendment to the Employment Act, Labour Relations Authority has published the Regulation on Service Charge today (16th March 2021) in the Gazette of the Government of Maldives.</span></span></p>
<p class="p1" style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; font-stretch: normal;"><span class="s1"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="p1" style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; font-stretch: normal;"><span class="s1"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;">This regulation stipulates the methods in which businesses must collect the Service Charge, how the Service Charge must be distributed among the employees and how the Employers must maintain all the relevant information and records to related to Service Charge.</span></span></p>
<p class="p1" style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; font-stretch: normal;"><span class="s1"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="p1" style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; font-stretch: normal;"><span class="s1"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;">Consequently, tourist resorts, tourist hotels, tourist guesthouses, training resorts, transit hotels, city hotels, tourist vessels, yacht harbors, integrated tourist resorts and private islands must levy a service charge of no less than 10%. However, any businesses operated within such establishments, for the sole purpose of selling goods, are exempted from this obligation.</span></span></p>
<p class="p1" style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; font-stretch: normal;"><span class="s1"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="p1" style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; font-stretch: normal;"><span class="s1"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;">In addition to this, the regulation also includes the manner in which any other business, who are not obligated to charge Service Charge, must act if they are levying a Service Charge on the services provided by them. </span></span></p>
<p class="p2" style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; font-stretch: normal; min-height: 16.7px;"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;"> </span></p>
<p class="p1" style="margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; font-stretch: normal;"><span class="s1"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; color: black;">Employers must submit the required information related to Service Charge, to the Labour Relations Authority and Maldives Inland Revenue Authority by April 1st and October 1st of every year, through a mechanism established for it by LRA. </span></span></p>

<p>In addition to information on the law and regulations regarding employment in Maldives, information about the mandate and work of the Authority was also given in the awareness session.</p>
<p>All the attendants were presented with a 2020 Desktop Calendar of Labour Relations Authority.</p>

<p>In addition to these, the hotel development site at Raa Ifuru was also visited for inspection.</p>
<p>Under clause 81 of the Employment Act, Labour Relations Authority has the power to enter and check the work place without any prior notice in order to check the compliance with the Employment Act. Also, the Authority has the power to implement administrative fines due to non-compliance or non-cooperation.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Deputy Mayor, Director General and Director of Fuvahmulah City Council met with officials of Labour Relations Authority on 10<sup>th</sup> October 2019, in a meeting held at Labour Relations Authority.</p>
<p>This meeting was held at the request of the City Council, to discuss employment related issues and the subject of undocumented expatriate employees. It was discussed in the meeting to set an easy mechanism for registration of expatriates in the City Council, via the internet portal developed by Labour Relations Authority. Information about a mobile application developed by the City Council to collect data on expatriates living in Fuvahmulah, along with a plan to give a registration card by the Council to every registered expatriate, was also shared by the council. In addition, discussions were held on how to properly maintain records of expatriates arriving and leaving the island.</p>
